This coloring book is at a much higher level than one might expect. The illustrations are truly top-notch, with a lovely folk art approach throughout. Each page is accompanied by an inspiring quotation and descriptive explanation of the scene. I love the checkerboards that appear in many of the backgrounds, which allow for a magical setting to the scenes below.
My favorite is the lighthouse, set within a small town set on a northeastern shoreline, with a checkerboard sky and Missouri Star quilted corners. It’s beautiful, and I love how the swirling flourishes in the frame suggest the roiling seas below. The quotation is from MLK: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” There are clever, careful touches like that in every single image. It’s a wonderful book — and full of wonders.
